DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

We have received many emails asking for information on disaster preparedness and planning.
Please rest assured that LTVFD has plans in place for every imaginable natural and man-made disaster - and, since our world has become a more dangerous place since 9/11, a few formerly 'unimaginable' disasters as well.
LTVFD has participated in training on the local, state and Federal response level to insure fast, coordinated and cooperative response if a disaster should strike.

We are also lucky in Floyd County to have a very active, well informed and experienced County Emergency Management Agency. The Floyd County EMA provides information, resources and education opportunities to the Emergency Services providers in Floyd County. They are an invaluable link in emergency response of all descriptions and sizes. You can view their webpage at
http://www.floydcounty.in.gov/fcema.asp

According to FEMA our area's threat level ratings for natural disasters are as follows:
FLOOD: high
EARTHQUAKE: elevated
STORMS WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES: high
TORNADO: highest

(see http://www/fema.gov/pdf/areyouready/natural_hazards_1.pdf )

Since the difficulties of responding to a major disaster like hurricanes Katrina and Rita have shown that being prepared for a disaster can make a huge difference in the lives of your family, we encourage you to prepare your family for the types of disasters in our area. Whether this is by familiarizing your family with information or actually having a kit available for short-term food, water and medical supplies, you can read all about disaster preparedness at "Ready America" at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Ready.gov website at
