LTVFD

Dear Fellow Lafayette Township Residents,
The Lafayette Township Volunteer Fire Department is proud to provide you with this annual report of Department activities. We have seen many changes and continued progress throughout 2005 and thus far in 2006.
As you will see from the run summary below, LTVFD was kept quite busy in 2005 with a total of 303 runs.

EMS Assists 138 - Public Assistance Calls 1
Hazardous Materials Responses 30 - Gas Leaks 4
Auto Accidents (Property damage only) 30 - Brush and Grass Fires 9
Auto Accidents (Involving injury) 39 - Mutual Aid Standby 2
Structure Fires 34 - Auto Extrications 3
Active Fire Alarms(Possible fires) 23 - Chimney Fires 3
Vehicle Fires 5 - C.O. Detector Calls 4
Illegal Burns 9 - Downed Trees 3
Good Intent Calls 6 - Rescues 3
Downed Power Lines 7 - Water Rescues 1

Our Current Active Roster includes 26 Firefighters, 5 EMT’s, and 4 First Responders

Average Number of Firefighters per Response ............ 7 Firefighters
Average Response Time of First Truck ............ 5.45 Minutes
Average Time of Response Vehicle Arrival on Scene ............ 11.22 Minutes

Compared to 2004, LTVFD saw a 10 % increase in the total amount of runs in 2005 (279 to 303). Confirmed structure fire runs doubled last year, (17 to 34) as did the number of active alarms of possible fires (10 to 23). Most other types of runs stayed much the same. We are still seeing a trend in an increasing amount of EMS related runs (122 to 138).

The most drastic changes over the last year were not in the total amount of runs, but in the response time of Firefighters and Fire Apparatus. While the overall average number of Firefighters responding stayed the same as 2004, response during the daytime hours decreased from 5 to 4 Firefighters. The average response time by vehicles also showed an alarming decrease. In 2004, Fire and EMS Apparatus was able to respond to a call in 2.43 minutes and arrive on the scene in 8.63 minutes. In 2005, Apparatus response time slowed to 5.45 minutes and arrived on scene in 11.23 minutes. LTVFD was forced to call for Mutual Aid from other Departments 63 times. On about 60 % of these Mutual Aid requested runs, only 1 or 2 Firefighters from LTVFD were available for these daytime responses. These trends continue so far for 2006.

As you can see, the above statistics is why LTVFD asked for petitions from you, the Taxpayers of Lafayette Township, for the approval of a Fire Protection District. The Lafayette Township Fire Protection District petition drive was successful, approved by the County Commissioners, and will take effect in January of 2007. This Fire Protection District will allow us to supplement our Volunteers with paid, daytime Firefighters and EMS personnel on station to improve our response times and capabilities. LTVFD wishes to thank all of you in supporting us so that we may serve you more rapidly and efficiently. As we previously stated, EMS related runs continue to increase due to new residents and the aging population of Lafayette Township. The creation of the new Fire Protection District will allow us to budget the funds for the payment of our EMS response unit, Squad One. LTVFD will no longer have to canvas each year for these funds. Until the District take effect, however, we still must make the payments that made it possible to purchase the Squad. So it is at this time, we must ask for your support in our final, annual canvas, which remains dedicated solely to the payments on Squad One. Your Donation to the “LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP FIRE EQUIPMENT FUND” is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed, and will be used solely for payments on Squad One.

LTVFD Members proudly answer the call to duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to help those in need. We are extremely grateful for the financial support provided by our fellow citizens each year, as well as the many calls and letters we receive. As Volunteers, our reward is knowing we have helped someone or somehow made a difference in our community.

If you are not able to make a monetary donation at this time, why not consider a donation of your time? There is a special feeling when you are able to help someone in real need. The Fire Department is always in need of Firefighter and EMS personnel. Volunteers are still needed to supplement the District. Your help does make a very important difference and will be greatly appreciated.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of Lafayette Township for the outstanding support of the Crusade for Children this year. With the generosity of Township residents, we succeeded in raising over $50,445.00. These funds remain in our local area to help children in need. Thank you to all who donated.
