WE CARE ABOUT KIDS.
Fire Prevention
Every year we visit hundreds of school children and
teach fire safety.

We are very proud of our school visit program. We don't stand in front of
a class of kids and give a speech. We talk and yell and wave our arms and
crawl on the floor and clap and cheer. Sometimes we even sing. Kids
actually hear us and learn what we are teaching. And they have fun.
WE TEACH THE BASICS -- AND BEYOND.
We teach how - and when - to call 9-1-1. We show kids that Firefighters
wear big, heavy, special clothes to protect them. We let kids see what a
Firefighter looks like and sounds like in gear. We show kids how to help a
Firefighter help them if they are ever trapped in a fire, and what to do to
stay safe until the Firefighter gets there. We teach Stop, Drop & Roll ...
Get Low Under Smoke & Go ... Get Out & Stay Out ... Have A Safe
Meeting Place ... and more. We show kids the fire truck and let them hear
the sirens. And, of course, we give out fire safety books, stickers, and other
fun stuff.

Our objective is to teach even young children to be pro-active about
safety. We have all heard stories of children who hid from fire under
furniture or in closets, or children who were so afraid of a Firefighter in
gear that a rescue was impeded. Too many Firefighters have seen too
many children scarred by fire -- or worse -- and we never want to see that
happen to another child.
A FREE COMMUNITY SERVICE.
Lafayette Township Volunteer Fire Department provides this service free
of charge to teachers, administrators or group leaders who request a Fire
Prevention Visit. We have seen small and large groups and visited kids
from 18 months to 18 years old. We visit public and private schools,
Sunday school classes, Scout troops, and Day Care Centers. For more
information in Floyds Knobs, contact your child's teacher, school or
group and ask if they participate. In other areas, contact your local Fire
Department.
