The Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday released to
the media the tape and transcript of Officer Joel White’s call for
help after he and his partner were ambushed outside an
Edwardsville home.

White and Officer Frank Denzinger were shot June 18 as they
approached the home of 15-year-old Tyler Dumstorf. White was
shot once in the hip while Officer Frank Denzinger was shot
twice, the second of which caused his death. White is
recovering at home, following a stay in the hospital with
serious injuries. Dumstorf fatally turned the gun on himself
minutes later.

Below is a slightly condensed version of White’s call to Floyd
County dispatchers after being shot and taking refuge behind
his police cruiser. An article published June 19 in The Tribune
featured some of the following statements taken from police
scanner traffic.

This transcript was given to The Evening News and The
Tribune by newsgathering partner WLKY-TV in Louisville, as
the newspaper did not receive a copy sent to other media from
the prosecutor’s office.

• Joel White: Shots fired! Officers down, officers down!

• Dispatch 22: This is 22 to all units, shots fired, officers down,
6004 Rachel Court, 6-0-0-4 Rachel Court.

• OIC: 22 put Stat Flight in the air

• OIC: 22, can you advise if 16 is on the scene there?

• Dispatch 22: 16 is on the scene.

• OIC: Okay.

• Joel White: District 22, 2219. I’m down, I can’t move, other
officer is down. I’m not sure of his status. Subject’s in the
house with a rifle, use caution on approach, he shot us both,
he shot us both from inside the house. He might be coming
back to finish us off. I can’t see where he’s at, can’t stick my
head out. I believe he has a high-powered rifle. My leg is, uh,
destroyed. I can’t move. I’m just holed up behind my car here.
10-43. I’m losing consciousness, I’m not sure I’ll be able to stay
conscious to, uh, defend our position here.

• Dispatch 22: Clear 2219. Just stay with us, stay with us, we do
have help on the way. If you can maintain a visual, do so. Just
stay with us and hang on.

• 307: 19 is on the scene, more shots fired, I’ll be out on foot,
on, uh, I’ll have my mobile with me. Uh, cell phone.

• 307: 307 Radio.
• Dispatch 22: 307 Go ahead.

• 307: Suspect is firing multiple shots. I’m trying to get a visual
at this time, from a distance, stand by.

• Joel White: This reply 2219. We need to secure the front of
this house. This subject has the ability to shoot subjects here,
at the front of the house. I can’t tell if he’ll come around and
flank us or not. We’re totally unprotected here. I haven’t heard
anything from 2216 for awhile. I’m not sure if he’s still
conscious at all.

• Dispatch 22: Clear 2219. 2216 if you can copy, click your mike.
